Articles are tiny words, but Americans notice right away when one is missing or extra. Use a or an for one thing that is new or not specific, the for something both people can identify, and no article for general ideas.

I bought a lamp. The lamp was on sale.
Coffee keeps me awake.

01A or an: listen, don't look
Choose by the first sound, not the first letter. An goes before a vowel sound: an hour, an MBA, an honest mistake. A goes before a consonant sound: a university, a one-way ticket, a European trip.
Use a or an for one thing mentioned for the first time, and for jobs: She's a nurse. He's an engineer.
02The: we both know which one
Use the when the listener knows exactly which thing you mean: you mentioned it already, there's only one, or the situation makes it clear. Superlatives and ordinals take the too.
- Can you close the door?
- The internet is down again.
- She's the best manager I've ever had.
- We took the first flight out of Dallas.
03No article: general ideas and most names
Use no article for plural and uncountable nouns in general (Dogs are loyal. I love Mexican food.) and for most names of people, cities, states, streets and single countries: Texas, Main Street, Canada. Meals, days and sports usually have no article either.
Some names do take the: the United States, the Philippines, the Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River, the Grand Canyon.

Some everyday phrases work differently in American English. British English drops the article in some of these, so trust the American versions below.
